Sam Houston was governor of two states and was president of the Republic of Texas. He also was the U.S. senator, military Hero and strangely was one of the most colorful figures of the 19th century. Sam was very well involved in the Texas Revolution He led a Texas army to a brilliant victory over Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto.
Early Life
In 1829 Sam Houston married Eliza Allen. Sam divorced her almost immediately because of fighting. In 1840 Sam married Margret Lea in Alabama. They had eight children and shared their love upon them. Later on in life Sam divorced her and left for Tina Rogers. Since Sam had a drinking problem his wife forced him to stop. Sam finally stopped drinking and lived a happy life with his wife
Jobs
Sam served as the first president of the new Republic from 1836-1838. Later Sam was elected to a second term. Sam was also U.S. senate serving from 1846-1859. Sam was unhappy that Texas seemed to be moving toward to secession. So he ran for governor as an unionist. Despite his efforts the people or Texas voted to secede, and he was forced out of office in 1861
Death
Sam sadly died of stroke at 76 years old. From that day on we still remember Samuel Houston for his independence and since he fought for us.
